Tottenham are eyeing up Benfica manager Roger Schmidt should they fail to convince Antonio Conte to extend his stay at the club.

That’s according to journalist Rudy Galetti, who covers the situation today and Tottenham’s plans to talk with Conte about his contract during the World Cup.

He reports on his website that after Tottenham’s best ever start to a league campaign, with 26 points in 13 games and first place in the Champions League, they are considered one of the ‘outsiders’ in both competitions.

The club want to extend their deal with Conte as a result, with the Italian’s current deal set to expire next summer and talks having been postponed on the subject for the time being.

Indeed, Conte has been heavily linked with a return to former club Juventus because of the situation.

Spurs plans to talk with their manager ‘in the coming weeks’, specifically during the World Cup in Qatar, during with Tottenham’s management will ‘sit down at the negotiating table’ with their coach.

Those talks will also discuss what they are planning to do during the January transfer window, but it is inevitable the focus will be on Conte’s deal.

However, knowing about the interest from Juventus, Tottenham are ‘rightly looking around’ and already have a Plan B in mind so as not to be ‘unprepared’.

According to Galetti’s information, Benfica coach Schmidt is seen as the ‘ideal profile’ to replace Conte should he leave in the summer.

He’s been impressing with Benfica since arriving in the summer, boasting a 2.73 points per game ratio and leading them into the knockout stages of the Champions League after topping Group H ahead of Paris Saint Germain and Juventus.

That performance has seemingly not gone unnoticed by Tottenham, who are eyeing a move should Conte decide not to extend his stay in London.
