Last week, ahead of the Conference League final between West Ham United and Fiorentina, Angelo Ogbonna started sitting down with Italian papers to discuss various matters.

One was the upcoming game, of course, but the other was his future, as his contract with the Hammers is set to expire at the end of the month.

The West Ham defender previously explained how comfortable he felt at the Premier League club and in London, and declared his love for both the team and the fans, which was a big hint he wanted to stay for longer, but he has now gone and said it outright in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.

Discussing the final, which could see the London side qualify for the Europa League with a win despite finish 14th in England’s top-tier, he admitted David Moyes and the players have the ‘utmost respect’ for Fiorentina and will plan accordingly to ensure for victory.

However, towards the end of the interview came the inevitable question of his future, which he was more than happy to answer.

He said: “My desire has always been to stay. The club is aware of it and we’re talking about it. We’re just waiting for the end of the season to define things. I look forward to staying, and West Ham know the respect I have for the club and the fans and all I’ve given over the years we’ve been together.”

Arriving from Juventus in an €11m transfer, Ogbonna has since made 231 appearances for West Ham in all competitions, scoring 13 goals and picking up one assist.
