The closer we get to the end of the season, the more the future of some players comes under scrutiny, and that’s exactly what’s happening in France regarding Swansea’s Bafétimbi Gomis.

Loaned to Marseille until the end of the season, the 31-year-old striker isn’t exactly keen to return to the Liberty Stadium next season, even if Paul Clement wasn’t against the idea altogether.

Gomis was a guest on the Canal Football Club on Sunday, and was asked whether or not he wanted to stay in the south of France.

His answer? To make a long story short, yes.

He said, relayed by Mercato365“When you’re happy somewhere, you don’t want it to stop. Do I want to stay? Yes, but I cannot look further than the end of my contract. I’m only on loan. There are few players who are born in the area and are lucky enough to wear this shirt.”

One big issue for Marseille is the player’s age, and, with a lack of backup in the position, their need to bring in another prolific goalscorer to be even more competitive next season.

Gomis knows this very well: “I don’t feel associated with the club’s future, but I want to carry the first stone of this project. I haven’t spoken with the board, but I have had a few words with the manager. He told me he’s counting on him beyond this season, but we never entered in the details.”

With names such as Olivier Giroud and André Silva being thrown around as competition for the veteran striker next year, it can’t be easy for Gomis right now.

Then again, his 18 goals in 30 appearances this season for the club more than make up for it.
