On Tuesday morning, reports claimed that Burnley placed a bid for Sporting midfielder Renato Veiga.

It was said the Clarets put £5.5m on the table, but as Portuguese outlet O Jogo features an update on the situation, they claim Veiga is actually closer to the Swiss side.

It’s claimed that the midfielder is currently in negotiations with Basel, and the terms should be agreed soon as he’s ‘close’ to doing so.

The story doesn’t even mention Burnley, and claims that Sporting’s priority is to get as much money up front as they can.

That may be the reason why the Clarets are staying behind, as the reports from this morning claimed their bid would be paid in three instalments.

O Jogo claims Veiga is close to a definitive departure from Sporting, and is expected to sign a contract with Basel in the coming days.

So if Burnley still want any chance to find a deal, they need to show they can pay more money up front.

It also wouldn’t be surprising if Basel were ready to guarantee him more minutes on the pitch at this point.
