Barcelona want to finalise a deal for Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo this week, but the structure of the potential deal is causing friction at this point in time.

That’s according to Sport, who say the Catalans have presented their latest offer for the Portuguese full-back.

That bid was a loan offer including a purchase option which would include a payment to Manchester City for the initial loan and one to the player to help reduce his wages and thus salary cost to Barcelona.

The La Liga champions are trying to avoid Cancelo being an ‘exorbitant’ cost on their books and are trying to convince Manchester City to include a purchase clause worth €30m for next summer.

They also want that clause to only become active in the event of certain objectives being met, such as reaching last 16 of the Champions League or the player featuring in 70% of games this season.

It is that final point which is causing friction as Manchester City want rid of Cancelo once and for all and want any clause in the loan deal to be ‘one hundred percent mandatory’ for next year.

Cancelo and his agent, Jorge Mendes, are applying all the pressure possible to try and force the deal through and are optimistic there will be a final agreement at some point.

The impending renewal of Bernardo Silva could be key as if that is sealed, City would give Mendes more options to place Cancelo at Barcelona.

The negotiations are underway regardless and there is an increased belief the transfer can be done, but only if the final point of contention can be overcome.
