Davie Selke has now revealed he favoured a move to Hertha Berlin over Brighton & Hove Albion in 2017.

After coming up through Werder Bremen’s youth system, the striker spent two years with their first team before moving to RB Leipzig in 2015. During his time with the latter, he scored 14 goals and registered four assists from 54 games.

Brighton and Hertha Berlin were fighting for his signature and the German club ended up acquiring his services in the summer of 2017. He made this claim during a podcast and his comments are relayed by Express.

“I had a great offer from Brighton. I actually told my agent that I wanted to do it in England,” he said.

Despite the Seagulls’ offer, the 28-year-old has explained his agent urged him to have a chat with Hertha Berlin’s leaders, and that proved to be decisive in helping them beat Brighton to his signature.

Hertha Berlin manager Pál Dárdai and their former general manager, Michael Preetz, were key in convincing Selke.

“I went to talk to Pál Dárdai and Michael Preetz and actually wanted to move to England,” Selke explained.

“The conversation really gripped me from the start, my father was also there. Dardai was open and honest, with his inimitable style. I was shown a clear path and also told that I would be the most expensive new signing Hertha has ever had – that also showed the appreciation,”

In January, the frontman left the Berlin club for 1. FC Köln.
