The Spanish press were especially keen on the match, with the dynamic between managers Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola being the angle that was driving much of it.

The game needed to produce a lot to come even close to living up to the hype, and it did. The match was a great advertisement for the Premier League, and Manchester City came out of it looking great.

Dominant in the first half, Guardiola’s men should have really have put the game to bed by half time, but Manchester United were allowed to keep some hope for much of the match.

Spain’s Mundo Deportivo look back at the match in their Monday edition, and say Manchester is now ‘stained’ blue after Guardiola’s men won. The Spanish newspaper say now, more than ever, Manchester City are noisy neighbours and underlined their greatness in the game.

Mundo Deportivo say: ‘The happiness of Manchester City contrasts with United’s concern. Everything has just begun, but so far the sun shines more strongly on the Etihad Stadium.’

And that’s the feeling across the European media, with Manchester City very much seen as the boss of their city right now. Jose Mourinho will want to quickly change that.
