With Hector Bellerin as their right-back for the long-term future, singing a contract until 2023, Arsenal will probably soon need to address their left-back position.

While Nacho Monreal and Kieran Gibbs have fulfilled their roles adequately over the years, there is a feeling the Gunners could do better in that role, which is why they were linked in the winter with Valencia’s José Luis Gaya.

The 21-year-old has often been suggested as an option for many Premier League clubs, and with Valencia having a rather poor season by their high standards, a move away could have been attractive.

Multiple reports suggested Arsène Wenger was keen on the defender, but it would appear no action was taken in the end, as revealed by the player himself in an interview with Cadena Ser when asked whether he’d been contacted by the Gunners during the last transfer window.

He said: “I really don’t know. I was never told anything about Arsenal being interested. I read about it, but no one told me about it. Like I said, I feel good here, and I’m happy.”

Gaya made his 100th appearance for Valencia against CD Leganes on Tuesday, which was the reason for the interview, and helped his team obtain a 1-0 win.

Currently 13th in La Liga, Gary Neville’s former team have seen their form improve over the past few weeks, managing a shock 2-1 win over Real Madrid on the 22nd of February.
