After a long saga of will he, won’t he, Miguel Almiron eventually signed for Newcastle United in January for just over £21m.

The Paraguay international made his full debut against Huddersfield at the weekend in a 2-0 win after coming off the bench against Wolverhampton a couple of weeks prior, yet the Magpies could have missed out on him altogether.

Manchester United’s interest has already been revealed, but the player’s agent, speaking to Cardinal Deportivo and relayed by ABC, revealed Southampton were also after him.

He said: “Arsenal offered a loan, and so did Southampton, but those two had doubts regarding the league he was coming from. They weren’t sure about him being an MLS player”.

While the attacking midfielder has yet to score or assist, he certainly made a good impression against the Terriers, and it seems that, so far, Newcastle were right to take a gamble.

Perhaps that’s what the Gunners and the Saints need to do more often going forward?

Before moving to St James’ Park, the 25-year-old had scored 13 goals and assisted teammates 13 times in 38 appearances in all competitions.
