Financially strapped during the January transfer window, Arsenal were going around the January transfer market asking for loans with a view to buy like cold callers enquiring if you’ve recently been in a car accident that wasn’t your fault

Only one club agreed to their demands, as Barcelona allowed Denis Suarez to move to the Emirates until the end of the season with a €20m option to make the deal permanent.

Deals for Ivan Perisic and Yannick Carrasco never materialised, and another has just been revealed, one for Newcastle’s most recent signing Miguel Almiron.

Swapping the MLS for the Premier League against a £21.5m fee, the Paraguay international made his full debut against Huddersfield at the weekend and impressed.

Speaking to Cardinal Deportivo and relayed by ABC, the player’s agent revealed a couple of offers his client turned down, including one from the Gunners.

He said: “Arsenal offered a loan and so did Southampton, but they had doubts regarding the league he was coming from. They weren’t sure about him being an MLS player”.

Eventually, Almiron moved to Newcastle as Rafa Benitez never had any doubts about his ability and ‘insisted’ for his transfer.

Maybe Unai Emery should have put his foot down too if he really wanted him.
