The name Florent Sinama-Pongolle might not bring back the best memories for Liverpool fans in Europe, but according to the player, having played for the Merseyside club in the past has its perks.

Transferring from Dundee United to Chainat FC in Thailand over the summer, the 31-year-old striker gave an interview to So Foot to talk about his integration in the new country, and, most importantly, his favourite Thai dish (Tom Yum, FYI).

Speaking to the French magazine about his arrival, the forward said: “I arrived at the airport discreetly because nothing was done, but once I signed, people started talking about me. In Thailand, you have to know that there are two hugely popular clubs: Manchester United and Liverpool.

“All the restaurants show the Premier League, it’s impressive. Even if I’ve struggled in the past, I’ve got a certain status here because I played for Liverpool. In the streets, I get asked for selfies and people even speak to me about my years at Liverpool.”

The now veteran striker explained the country’s fascination for social media means he rarely goes out unnoticed, something he actually quite enjoys.

Still struggling with the language, Sinama-Pongolle revealed Thai footballers are actually quite quiet on the pitch, despite his attempts to talk to them, as is the norm of being vocal in European football.

The strangest thing about football in Thailand, though? ‘Having to walk barefoot in the training facilities’, which means the use of flip-flops is encouraged.

A new chapter in a nomadic career for the striker who scored eight goals in 57 Liverpool appearances.

In case you were wondering, he’s already scored 13 in 10 for Chainat FC.
