Jonny’s move to Wolves came as something of a surprise during the summer transfer window.

Playing for Celta Vigo and impressing in Spanish football, the 24 year old had been waiting for the right transfer to make. Things got a little fraught with Celta at the end which was a disappointment given how long Jonny had been associated with the club.

Atletico Madrid wanted to build a transfer and avoid losing the fullback to anyone else in La Liga, but they didn’t believe he’d get many games with them this season and didn’t fancy paying wages for little benefit.

That’s where Wolves came in and a loan to the Premier league side was negotiated before the move from Celta was completed.

Jonny has been speaking to Marca and made it very clear he see his long term future as an Atletico Madrid player, this is very much a one season Wolves thing for the Spaniard.

But he’s still happy to be at Nuno Espirito Santo’s club, telling Marca: “I took it with immense joy, first to become an Atlético player and second to come to a league that for me was always a challenge and a dream, a team that has a lot of ambition and has done things very well in summer.”

Jonny joins the ranks of those impressed with Wolves’ summer transfer business, and he’s looking a good part of it himself.

The move will only work out if he gets the games needed to impress Diego Simeone, and he added: “For me it is also a great satisfaction, to come to England, to continue growing and I hope to have the maximum minutes to prepare myself for my return to Atletico.”

With three starts so far, the plan is going well.
