West Ham United are through to the Europa League quarter-finals, and the Seville based media have taken a bit of a slap in the face as a result.
The Hammers progressed through to the next round last night, with goals from Tomas Soucek and Andriy Yarmolenko sealing a 2-0 win and overturning their 1-0 defeat in Spain.
It’s a big result for David Moyes’ side, who have not only beaten one of the better sides in the competition but one who have a strong history of success in it as well.
Indeed, they were very much the underdogs for the tie, something that was borne out after the first leg when the Seville based media were very critical of their style of play and Moyes’ tactics.
Well, they’ve been forced to choke on those words slightly after last night, which not only saw their side beaten, but their opinion of the Hammers change too.
They say West Ham ‘read the different phases’ of the match better than their Spanish opponents and ‘overwhelmed’ Julen Lopetegui’s side from the off.
This was all aided by a ‘packed’ London Stadium that ‘spurred on’ their team on the pitch throughout the match.
Sevilla’s midfield was ‘overrun’, the defence was ‘spread wide’, and Ivan Rakitic was a ghost in the middle of the park as he was left with so many jobs to do he ended up doing none.
The La Liga side picked up in the second half but never hurt West Ham, and by extra time, the Hammers ‘finished imposing their physicality and their football’ against the ‘depleted’ Spaniards.
All in all, they were ‘pushed’ in every department by West Ham and ‘suffered’ as a result, with Moyes and co through courtesy of a big scalp that’ll live long in the memory.
