Chelsea’s desire to sign a new midfielder towards the latter stages of the last window saw them bring Denis Zakaria on loan from Juventus.

The Blues made attempts for a few other players before settling on Zakaria. Among them was Edson Álvarez and Ajax rejected the west London club’s bid in the summer.

Zakaria was Thomas Tuchel’s signing, and the German manager was replaced by Graham Potter last month. The midfielder is yet to make an appearance for Chelsea, and it has led to claims the English club are considering terminating his loan deal in January.

According to MedioTiempo, the Premier League side are expected to make a decision on the Juve owned player in the coming days. If they decide to let go of him, it would ‘open an opportunity’ for Álvarez to join them.

After a failed summer move, the Mexico international would get a ‘second chance’ to sign for Chelsea. Álvarez could join the Blues in the winter market, provided Potter likes him. This opportunity may come ‘sooner rather than later’ for the Ajax star.
