Bayer Leverkusen winger Demarai Gray has admitted his last few years at Leicester City were a ‘rollercoaster ride’.

Gray moved to Leverkusen at the end of the January transfer window, with the Foxes electing to let the player go for a low fee as his contract was expiring in the summer.

His move to the Bundesliga brought an end to a five-year stay at Leicester, where he had arrived in a £4.59m deal as a highly-rated teenager from Birmingham City.

Gray had looked likely to fulfil his potential at the club but found himself out of favour since Brendan Rodgers’ arrival at the club, with the likes of Harvey Barnes moving ahead of him in the pecking order as a result.

indeed, this year he had managed just one 18 minute appearance in the Premier League, a clear indication of his standing in Rodgers’s plans.

It was that which prompted his move from Leicester, and the player admits his time at the club had highs and lows.

“I haven’t played regularly for so long. I have this hunger in me,” he told Kicker.

“I know my abilities and what I can achieve when I feel confidence.

“He (Rodgers) was open and honest. It was good and bad times. For me, it was a rollercoaster ride. I want to make my mark on the Bundesliga.

“Maybe I’m later than I or other people expected, but I don’t doubt myself or question myself.

“The style of play was very attractive and appealing to me; this new challenge is perfect for me to get out of my comfort zone. Sometimes as a player, you need a new start.”
