On Saturday, Watford did what no team could do in the Premier League for the previous 44 games, and that was beat Liverpool.
Nigel Pearson’s men walked away from Vicarage Road with an improbably 3-0 win over the comfortable league leaders, and in the process escaped the relegation zone for the time being.
However, all that came at a price, as Watford also had to deal with the fact Gerard Deulofeu ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and tore his meniscus, which means he will likely be out for the rest of the season.
The news was announced on Monday and it will be a blow for the Hornets, who had relied on the Spaniard’s creativity and finishing for goals this season.
On Tuesday, his teammate Kiko Femenía was interviewed by Radio Marca, who asked him about Deulofeu and if he’d spoken to him.
He said: “Yes, I’ve been talking to him. I think he’s going to Barcelona on Wednesday. I don’t know when his operation is. I think in a week or two. I hope everything goes really well. We’ll really f****d up over this. We’re so sorry for him, not being with him, not sharing the dressing room with him. He’s going to be a great loss for us”.
That says it all really, and everyone at Watford will be hoping he comes back as quickly as possible, and more importantly, returns to his full ability to once again do what he does best, which is provoke opposing teams with his creativity and flair.
