Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella “had no idea” what to do as a defender against Real Madrid while Wesley Fofana is a “waste of money.”

That’s the opinion of Dutch analysts Jan Boskamp and Wesley Sneijder, relayed by Voetbal Primeur, who have criticised the Chelsea pair following the Blues’ defeat in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Chelsea travelled to Real Madrid to take on the Spanish side in the first leg of their quarter-final clash last night, hoping to pull off what would have been a surprise victory against the reigning champions.

That never looked likely to happen, though, as despite an early chance for Joao Felix, the hosts dominated throughout.

That culminated in a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio, but the score could and probably should have been much higher given Real Madrid enjoyed 10 shots on target in the game.

That was courtesy of a Chelsea defensive line which did not look competent for much of the clash, with Ben Chilwell seeing red for an ill-advised professional foul in the 59th minute the highlight of a ropey defensive showing.

Two of those who failed to impress were Cucurella and Fofana, who came in for criticism after the game.

“Really unbelievable,” Boskamp said regarding the Spaniard, who replaced an injured Kalidou Koulibaly in the 55th minute.

“I can imagine that boy playing as a full back, but as a defender he had no idea. That happens regularly because he can’t defend at all. It was really very mediocre and I’m saying it nicely.”

“Who brings in a guy like that,” added Sneijder.

“There are a few more like that running around. That Wesley Fofana too, recruited for €80m, that really is a waste of money. Maybe the pressure is too high at such a big club.”
