Wednesday’s edition of L’Equipe edged some pressure towards the way of Moussa Dembele, following his transfer from Celtic to Lyon.

The striker’s first match had been against Caen, and he was rated just 4/10 by the French newspaper for his performance.

Then came a substitute appearance against Marseille, and despite Lyon winning 4-2 it was made very clear the former Celtic player didn’t shine and needed to learn the game of his teammates.

That may well be happening quickly, because on Wednesday evening, Dembele put in a very good performance as Lyon beat Dijon 3-0 away from home.

Dembele scored two of those goals and was rated as 8/10, a very high rating for L’Equipe, and was named the French newspaper’s Man of the Match.

It gives some breathing space for the former Celtic player and means there’s less danger of him being called a flop.

The French media appeared to back the player in his row with Brendan Rodgers, or at least not criticise him, but have been ready to doubt his contribution.

Dembele has answered them back in style, and is included in L’Equipe’s Ligue 1 Team of the Week for the latest round of matches.
