Barcelona defender Clément Lenglet was on loan at Tottenham Hotspur last season. On Wednesday, Mundo Deportivo reported Spurs ‘want to continue counting’ on the 28-year-old next season.

Mundo’s claim is backed up by Sport, who say Tottenham are willing to keep the centre-back at the club and have started talks with the La Liga side.

It’s stated ‘progress has been made’ after the two clubs had ‘contacts’ yesterday and a ‘few more meetings will still be needed’ for the ‘final agreement’.

The Catalan club are looking to offload the Frenchman before June 30th to improve their finances, which is needed to carry out new signings, but Ange Postecoglou’s side and the defender are not in a hurry.

Sport say Tottenham’s initial idea was to extend the defender’s loan deal and take care of his wages but Barca want to get rid of him permanently. Lenglet’s salary is a ‘problem’ for Spurs as they cannot match it, especially if they also have to pay a fee to the Spanish club.

The newspaper states that ‘to compensate for the Frenchman’s lower salary’, Tottenham are willing to offer him a five-year deal. They add Spurs’ offer to Barca would be around €5m.

Barcelona ‘would like to close the operation’ before June 30th to lower their wage bill, and this may give Spurs an advantage to try to lower the price for Lenglet.
