Former Gent midfielder Danijel Milicevic has urged the club to deliver a ‘unique performance’ and beat West Ham United in the second leg of their Europa Conference League quarter final on Thursday.

The 37-year-old has been speaking to Het Nieuwsblad, relayed by Voetbal Nieuws, ahead of the second leg later this week.

He knows all about performing in England with Gent, having been a part of one of the most successful sides in the club’s history.

That saw them enjoying success at home and abroad, particularly in Europe, when they knocked Tottenham out of the Europa League in 2017 over two legs.

The first of those saw them securing a 2-2 draw at Wembley, where Tottenham were playing their home games that year, before beating Spurs 1-0 at home in the return leg.

That remains one of the club’s more famous victories but could be joined by a win over West Ham, with the tie finely poised following a 1-1 draw in Belgium in the first leg.

If it’s to happen it will take a special performance from the current squad, with Milicevic offering his words of advice to them.

“Playing football against an English team is a special experience anyway,” he said.

“If you are not 100%, you don’t stand a chance. Also, don’t forget that we don’t have as big a core of players as they do – we can’t bring in great players like Antonio or Paqueta.

“Ah well, the pressure is on West Ham anyway. We just want to surprise everyone. If you want to win in London, you have to deliver a unique performance.”
