Player’s recent renewal a big transfer blow for Tottenham – Club can now ‘decide what price to set’

On February 12th, Bayer Leverkusen announced that Tottenham target Piero Hincapié had extended his contract until 2027.

That didn’t really come as a surprise, since the player is one of the best in the Bundesliga team’s squad and also one of their most valuable.

Tottenham had been linked with a move for the Ecuador international over the January transfer window, although it was clear that he wouldn’t be allowed to move this season after their terrible start and general struggles this season.

Still, they know that they can’t keep him around, but they are doing what they can maximise any future sale of the 21-year-old with this new contract.

That’s because, as explained by Fichajes in Spain, ‘the release clause has been eliminated’, and that’s so Leverkusen can ‘decide exactly the conditions’ of his exit.

They know Hincapié is a ‘highly valued player on the market’, and there are ‘several clubs interested’ in his services, among which can be found Tottenham.

They are said to be ‘interested in incorporating him’ into their squad, and while before there was a release clause that could be triggered, it will now be the German side ‘who decide what price to set and the conditions to choose’.
