At the end of the summer window, Clement Lenglet turned down a transfer to Saudi Arabia and ended up joining Aston Villa instead.

That move is still a subject in the Spanish media, where Marca today feature a story claiming Al Nassr wanted to pay a fee for his transfer.

It’s said there was a formal offer from the Saudi side, who put €8m on the table and would still pay his €12m yearly salary.

Even though Barcelona thought that was a ‘good operation’ and wanted to take it, they saw Lenglet rejecting the opportunity. And because of his great behaviour at the club, they decided not to push it.

By the end of the transfer window, the likes of Sevilla, Betis and Aston Villa showed up wanting a loan deal, and Unai Emery’s side ended up winning that race.

It’s been previously claimed that the Villans would spend €16m on Lenglet’s wages, and Marca claims that despite claims about those numbers, his salary is really actually worth €12m.

So Barcelona seem gutted to have missed such an opportunity, and Aston Villa can rest assured the player was determined to continue at the highest level.
