Last summer, following the end of his contract with Newcastle United, Federico Fernandez joined Spanish side Elche for free.

The defender agreed to a one-year deal with the La Liga club, and despite the short-term contract, it seems he could leave them even before it expires.

As Estadio Deportivo today feature a piece about players who are negotiating their departures from Elche, Fernandez is among them.

The former Newcastle defender is said to be in talks to rescind his contract, as he hasn’t been of any use for the Spanish club.

Fernandez has only made one appearance, in early October, and hasn’t even been taken to games, with Estadio Deportivo claiming he’s been struggling with fitness. That’s why Elche told him they don’t want to ‘continue with his services’.

That’s something similar to what the defender lived in his final season for Newcastle, where he only made seven appearances in the Premier League, and didn’t play a single game between December 2021 and May 2022.

Fernandez is expected to leave Elche as a free agent, and that will at least give him the chance to work to find his next destination.
