Liverpool’s Fábio Carvalho has told A Bola that he’s improved after training with quality players at the Premier League side.

The attacking midfielder arrived at Anfield in the summer of 2022 and found it difficult to feature regularly for the Reds. To put it in context, he clocked in 637 minutes from 21 games, scoring three goals in the process.

Last summer, Liverpool sent him out on loan to RB Leipzig, where the 21-year-old wasn’t able to have a prominent role.

In the winter market, the Premier League side cut short his stay in Germany and allowed the player to join Hull City, again on a temporary deal.

Carvalho is featuring regularly under Liam Rosenior and after talking about his move to Hull, A Bola asked him to assess his debut season at Liverpool. When responding to that, the Portugal U21 international explained the reasons he picked the Merseyside club.

“It was a bit like my career has been: ups and downs. But I learnt a lot there, with players at a different level. I went to Liverpool because I want to be the best player in the world,” he said.

“And to get there I have to compete every day with the best in the world. I learnt a lot from those players who have so much experience in the Premier League and the Champions League. It’s a very strong group, both on and off the pitch, who have taken me in as one of their own. I’m very grateful to them and to Mr Klopp.”

A Bola asked him if he often thinks about becoming the best in the world.

Responding to that, Carvalho explained: “Yes, I think about being the best in the world every day [laughs]. That’s what I work towards. To be the best, you have to learn from the best and work towards it every day. That’s what I’m always focussed on.”

The Liverpool man revealed he looks up to his compatriot and former Manchester United star, Cristiano Ronaldo. Carvalho made this claim when asked who inspires him the most.

“There’s only one, isn’t there? [more laughter] Cristiano Ronaldo! The way he works is incredible. I know people who played with him at Manchester United and, even at his age, he still works the same way and takes care of himself. Everyone tells me he’s a madman who lives and breathes football. He always wants to be the best, that’s why he’s reached the level he has,” he added.

A Bola point out that Carvalho and Ronaldo have a few things in common as both came from a difficult background, and asked whether that’s something which gives him strength to fulfil his dream of being the best in the world.

“Of course. It gives me motivation every day. Seeing my mum and dad get up early every day to go to work. Then leaving one job for another so they could earn a bit more… Those things give me strength. When I’m tired, or don’t feel like training so much, I think about those moments and that I need to give my parents a better life,” Carvalho said.

When asked if he plans to return to Liverpool, the attacker said: “Yes, in the pre-season.”
