Arsenal summer signing Marquinhos has spoken to the Brazilian media about his big move to the Gunners.
The forward was interviewed by Gazeta Esportiva, and gave an explanation to São Paulo fans on why he chose to move to London at this stage of his career.
Marquinhos’ contract with São Paulo was about to expire when he signed with Arsenal. It was due to a good relationship between Edu Gaspar and the Brazilian club that the Gunners chose to pay a fee for the transfer, as they could’ve waited and signed him for free.
“It’s complicated. I understand the fans’ side, wanting me to stay to help the club. But it was an opportunity, a dream that my family and I had to play in Europe. When Arsenal came, there was no way to say ‘no’. It was a childhood dream, even more so at a club like Arsenal, given the history they have.”
Even though Marquinhos was expected to be loaned out as soon as he arrived at Arsenal, the Gunners haven’t done that yet.
They even took him on the pre-season tour, and with one month until the end of the transfer window, it isn’t yet clear whether they’ll keep him in the squad for the next season or if they’ll let him get experience somewhere else.
The teenager signed a five-year deal with the London side.
