Benfica fullback João Ferreira is on his way to Watford, according to reports from the Portuguese media.

Several newspapers today write that the player, who had been on loan at Rio Ave, is having his spell cut short to make the move to the Championship side.

According to O Jogo, Watford are paying an initial amount of €2.5m for the transfer, with another potential €500k in bonuses. There’s already an agreement between the clubs and Ferreira is said to be ‘one step’ from completing the transfer.

Regarding his loan at Rio Ave, for whom he made 12 appearances this season, it’s said it’s Benfica who’ll handle that. The Eagles shall send them another loanee, and the Hornets shouldn’t be forced to pay any kind of compensation for suddenly taking the player from them in the middle of the season.

João Ferreira is 21 years old and had joined Benfica as a teenager. He went through all of the club’s youth ranks and spent the past couple of seasons on loan spells. O Jogo mention he’s a signing ‘to help Watford to secure the return to the Premier League’.

For now, there’s now prediction on when the move shall be completed.
