Liverpool youngster Sepp van den Berg has revealed he plans to fight for a place at the club this summer rather than focus on another loan deal.
The 20-year-old is set to return to Anfield at the end of this month, having spent this season on loan at Preston North End.
He’s been a regular for the Championship side throughout the campaign, making 45 appearances in the league as a key player in the side.
It’s been a season of rapid development for the Dutchman, who joined Liverpool from PEC Zwolle in 2019 but had to leave Merseyside temporarily in order to continue his development.
That’s something he’s managed with Preston in the Championship, an experience he now plans to take back with him to Liverpool, where he is hoping he can play alongside compatriot Virgil van Dijk in the heart of Jurgen Klopp’s backline.
“The intention is that I participate in the preparation and then conquer my spot in the dressing room,” the stopper told Voetbal International, relayed by Voetbal Primeur.
“At the same time, I know that the competition is cut-throat. This summer, I will fight for a place in the starting line-up.
“That’s what I hope for; that’s what I dream of (playing with Van Dijk). That’s my goal towards next season. The World Cup can help me with that.
“It will be a long and tough season. A lot of guys will leave or be away temporarily. Then maybe you get the chance to stay just a little bit earlier. I must then see to take that.”
