Neal Maupay’s agent has revealed Salernitana tried signing him before he joined Everton last summer.

Federico Pastorello detailed this during a chat with TuttoMercatoWeb at a TransferRoom Summit held at Stamford Bridge. The agent refused to dwell on why his client didn’t end up at the Italian club.

“We had a strong negotiation with Salernitana, then he went to Everton,” he said.

Everton took the forward from Brighton & Hove Albion and was the only attacker added to their squad this season. Frank Lampard was then in charge at the Merseyside club and was shown the exit door earlier this year.

The Toffees appointed Sean Dyche as Lampard’s successor and the Frenchman has largely been reduced to a substitute role under the latter. The managerial change at Goodison Park could have an impact on the player’s future at Everton.

Maupay’s representative has admitted his client has eyes set on making a switch to Serie A and even opened the door for the 26-year-old to change clubs in the next window.

“There was a managerial change, we are at the end of the season and we’ll see what to do. He sees Serie A as a place to go, we will work to accommodate him, probably there will be work for him in Italy,” Pastorello explained.

The player’s deal is until 2025 and Everton have an option to further extend it by a year.
