Last September, Brighton & Hove Albion’s Steven Alzate sealed a season-long loan move to Standard Liège.

The midfielder has made 23 appearances in all competitions this season, managing two goals and three assists in the process.

Last month, AS reported the 24-year-old will return to Brighton next season. The player, on the other hand, has admitted he could continue at the Belgian club beyond his loan spell.

Standard Liège CEO Pierre Locht told Het Laatste Nieuws, relayed by Walfoot, that there is a “little chance” his side can retain the Seagulls owned player and Philip Zinckernagel [on loan from Olympiacos] next season.

Although the chief has revealed the Jupiler Pro League side don’t have an option to buy the duo, he hasn’t ruled out the Colombia international and Zinckernagel extending their stay at Standard Liège.

“We haven’t heard anything about it. But the fact is that we have no option to buy these players. The two do not exclude a future at Standard. A European ticket would obviously be important in this context. Then, perhaps, later in the transfer window,” Locht said.

Standard Liège are sixth in the table and in contention to qualify for next season’s Europa League play-offs.

Alzate’s contract at The Amex expires in 2024. If Brighton decide not to hand him a new deal, the summer window would be their last chance to cash in from his sale.
