Newcastle United showed firm interest in signing Flamengo’s Matheus França in the winter market.

The Tyneside club made multiple bids but those were rejected by the Brazilian club. Earlier this month, Coluna do Fla explained the Magpies’ dream to sign the 18-year-old has been postponed until the summer.

The attacking midfielder continues to be on Newcastle’s agenda and the possibility of securing his services won’t be made easy by Flamengo.

O Dia now explain Flamengo want to ‘prevent’ the Premier League side from snatching the player in the summer.

To do this, they started talks with him and his family over an extension, which will include an improved salary and a new release clause. It’s claimed França should sign an extension on Friday and the new deal will last until 2028.

Journalist Venê Casagrande covered the report for O Dia and he took to Twitter to provide more information on this case. He states França’s clause will not change from €100m for clubs outside his country, while the clause will increase for teams in Brazil.

In subsequent tweets, Casagrande explains that Newcastle’s ‘strong’ interest in the Brazil U20 international saw Flamengo ‘rush to give’ him a new contract.

These new developments would make it difficult for Eddie Howe’s side to sign França in the next window.
