Newcastle United ‘see a great opportunity’ to sign AC Milan’s Charles De Ketelaere in the winter market, according to Voetbalkrant.

The Belgium international arrived at the San Siro from Club Brugge in the last transfer window, after starring for the Jupiler Pro League winners.

He managed 18 goals and 10 assists from 49 matches in all competitions last term. The 21-year-old has failed to replicate the Club Brugge form for the Rossoneri as he has failed to score and registered one assist from 16 matches.

Voetbalkrant state the attacking midfielder has not lived up to the expectations at Milan and the criticism he has been receiving is gradually increasing, meaning Newcastle ‘want to take advantage’ of this and bring the player to the Tyneside club.

In order to do that, Eddie Howe’s side ‘want to make an offer’ of €30m for De Ketelaere in January.

Milan invested €32m in securing the attacker’s services, and although the Magpies’ proposal would be less than this figure, they hope the Italian champions would think of damage limitation and open the door for De Ketelaere to change clubs.

It needs to be seen whether Stefano Pioli’s side would be willing to let the Belgian leave, just months after investing in him.

One way for De Ketelaere to put these claims to bed is by improving his performances. If not, it could be difficult for him since the report states the ‘credit at an Italian top club can run out very quickly’.
