AC Milan’s strong interest in signing Sven Botman from Lille makes the defender a constant topic in the Italian media, and they collectively can’t stop talking about the chances the Rossoneri have of landing him when the summer window opens.

An interesting update is brought by Sky Sport journalist Angelo Mangiante, who on Twitter, claims the Serie A giants may have an advantage over Newcastle United for this signing.

The reason for that is the presence of Paolo Maldini as a director.

Mangiante says that when leaving Real Madrid, Theo Hernandez ‘could never say no’ to an official who’s ‘the strongest defender in history’. Now the same could happen to Botman.

It’s pointed out that Newcastle United ‘have offered more’ for the 22-year-old, but the call from Maldini could end up being decisive for the player to turn down the Magpies and move to Italy.

Milan’s chase for Botman seems to be quite strong, with reports today claiming the player’s representative has been at the San Siro to speak to club officials.

Despite all of that, it can’t be ruled out that the Dutchman would simply prefer the Premier League, if Newcastle manage to stay up.

On deadline day he spoke to the Dutch media and made it clear he’d been tempted by a January move to the Magpies, so perhaps the confidence in Italy is misplaced.
