Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij turned ‘rejected a rich offer’ from Newcastle United to finish the season in Italy.

That’s according to Tuttomercatoweb, who say the player refused the efforts from St James Park to make a move happen.

Newcastle spent all of January on the hunt for a new centre-back, pushing hard to sign the likes of Sven Botman and Diego Carlos.

They could not get either of those players and instead settled on Brighton’s Dan Burn when negotiations for the other two proved difficult.

It seems they tried to get someone else, though, with TMW reporting that they made a ‘rich offer’ for Inter’s De Vrij.

According to their information, an approach was made for the Dutch defender, but negotiations ‘immediately stalled’ due to the ‘will of the player’.

He made it clear he had no intention of moving clubs as he is comfortable in Milan and even open to the possibility of extending his stay with Inter.

Whether they want to do so remains to be seen, and the Nerazzurri’s plans for the future will be defined in the coming weeks.

Perhaps Newcastle will then be given another shot in the summer then after seeing their efforts in January swiftly rejected.
