Already trying back in January, Newcastle United are back with their attempts to sign Duvan Zapata from Atalanta.

The Serie A side were reluctant to sell their star midway through the season, and stood firm against offers from the Magpies and West Ham United, only for the Colombian to end up seriously injured shortly after.

He missed a good three months of football, before coming back for the back end of the season, but only managed the one goal in seven league appearances.

Atalanta didn’t finish the campaign well as a whole, so that doesn’t necessarily reflect on how the player recovered from his injury, but that is a doubt Newcastle are having.

This is according to Corriere di Bergamo, who report that while a deal with Eddie Howe’s side for Zapata is ‘feasible’, the Premier League club ‘doubt the player’s physical condition after the relapse last year’.

This suggests that while Newcastle are keen on the striker, they could be keeping off from making an offer for the time being, seeing how he does in pre-season before pulling the trigger.

Either that, or they are trying to use his 2022 fitness record to their advantage to perhaps lower the asking price.
