Newcastle United are eyeing a move for Al Ahli midfielder Gabriel Veiga as they look to find cover following Sandro Tonali’s 10-month ban.

That’s according to Fichajes.net, who say Newcastle have ‘set their sights’ on the 21-year-old as they aim to strengthen their midfielder in the January transfer window.

They explain that the Magpies wish to find a new midfielder to replace Tonali, who will miss the rest of the season after being banned for 10 months for gambling on football.

They’ve now turned their attention to Veiga, who moved to Saudi Arabia in the summer in a surprise move after starring at Celta Vigo.

The youngster had established himself as one of the rising stars of Europe after making his debut for the Spanish side in 2022, catching the eye of several big sides in Europe before surprisingly moving to the Middle East.

Despite his ‘apparent satisfaction’ in the Saudi Pro League, Fichajes say Newcastle have ‘expressed interest’ in signing the young midfielder.

Al Ahli are one of the clubs owned by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund and that shared ownership could ‘pave the way’ for a possible agreement in January.

The Magpies are limited in what they can do in the winter by FFP after several windows of big spending since PIF took charge.

As a result, they have turned to their owners and ‘agreed to explore’ options in the Saudi Pro League, where PIF own several clubs and can offer options such as Veiga or Ruben Neves.

A move for Veiga is one that ‘will continue to develop’ in the coming weeks as Newcastle looks at its midfield needs and looks to reach a deal to help cover the loss of Tonali.

Now, given the source we’ll take this report with a pinch of salt but this is the first time we’ve seen Veiga linked and it’s potentially a move that would make sense, especially given they were heavily linked with a move before his switch to Saudi Arabia.
