Newcastle United are once again showing an interest in Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapié as they look to bolster their squad in the January transfer window.

That’s according to Christian Martin for D Sports and BILD, who cover the player and throw Newcastle into the mix for him.

Reports this week have indicated that the Ecuadorian could be on the move in the near future as he’s barely featured for Leverkusen this season, with manager Xabi Alonso preferring other options and that working out well so far.

Thus, the door for a transfer could be opening and several English clubs have been linked, having shown an interest in the past.

Newcastle have now been added to that mix, with Christian Martin reporting that they are one of the clubs who have a longstanding interest in him and still ‘seriously want him’.

He explains that while the defender has a €70m release clause that can be seen as ‘achievable’ or even acceptable given what he’s shown so far in his career.

BILD meanwhile, say Hincapié is ‘particularly popular’ in England and say Newcastle are one of the ‘interested parties’ for the youngster.

They, though, pour a little bit of cold water on the matter, stating that it is unlikely he will leave Leverkusen in January as they’ll need him to cover for player’s leaving for the African Cup of Nations.

Thus, it would make no sense to sell but a transfer could be an idea for the summer, particularly as a sale would bring Leverkusen a big financial gain.

Either way Newcastle remain firmly in the mix for the defender, who is a long-term target and may be a name to keep an eye on as their defence continues to be beset by injuries.
