It seems that Emil Krafth is about to see his contract extended at Newcastle United, if Fotboll Direkt are to be believed on Thursday.

The outlet took to their website to recall that previous stories suggested the Magpies would not be renewing the Swedish defender, and that’s why a January transfer was ‘seriously considered’.

However, all this appears to be ‘changing dramatically’, since their information is that the 29-year-old will ‘sign a new contract’ with Newcastle ‘shortly’.

The Premier League side are said to have ‘decided to use the option’ to extend his deal by a year, and the player has ‘accepted more and more playing time’ at the end of games, such as the recent fixture against Aston Villa.

Had this not happened, there would have been some offers for him, as Malmö FF, FC Copenhagen and Brøndby were after him.

The Newcastle player was reported as interested in these options, but ‘given the financial level involved’ and his priority being a stay at St James’ Park, this was the preferred move.

Therefore, despite the article claiming a new contract is on the way, it appears that the Magpies will only be triggering the option in his current deal to avoid him leaving on a free at the end of the season, since his contract was set to expire in June 2024.
