Newcastle United are set to be without Sandro Tonali for next 10 months for his involvement in the Italian football betting scandal.

This has resulted in the Magpies being credited with an interest in various midfielders by the media in the UK and beyond.

This includes Turkey’s Fotomaç, who state Newcastle have emerged as a ‘surprise suitor’ to sign Fenerbahçe’s Fred in January.

The 30-year-old spent five years at Manchester United before leaving them for the Turkish club in the last window.

The Yellow Canaries have won each of their fixtures this season and Fred, who has made 12 appearances, has been a key player under manager İsmail Kartal.

It’s explained that Eddie Howe has four players on his midfield target list and that includes the Brazil international. Fotomaç don’t mention the other three but state Newcastle may make an offer to secure the South American’s services in the winter market.

There’s no mention of the fee the Premier League side may propose to Fenerbahçe but the outlet claims Fred, who has a contract until 2027, is valued at €20m.

Fotomaç don’t mention either the player’s stance or that of Fenerbahçe on this possible operation, but given he’s been important it’s unlikely the club would be keen.
