Newcastle United may want to step up their efforts for Swedish youngster Lucas Bergvall, with his big international debut likely to increase interest in him.

Fotboll Skanalen cover the player today after he made his debut for the Swedish A national team in a friendly with Estonia yesterday.

They explain that Bergvall, who is considered one of the rising stars for his country after breaking through at Djurgården, made a 30-minute appearance in the game, which his side won 2-1.

That game was watched by ‘plenty of scouts’ from around Europe, who the outlet say ‘surely scouted’ the coveted Djurgården talent.

They don’t name any names, so it’s unclear if Newcastle were one of them, but they were linked with a move for the player this week, with a report from Sweden claiming they’d made a bid and were trying to win the race for him.

That was followed by claims in Spain that Eintracht Frankfurt had also made a bid while Barcelona and Inter were ‘in the hunt’ for him.

They’ll be even more keen now as the player takes the next step in his career and breaks through onto the international stage as well.

Thus, perhaps Newcastle would be wise to step up their efforts if they’re as keen as has been claimed, with the youngster clearly being watched by rival bidders.

He, for his part, is simply focused on playing his football and insisted he was unaware of any scouts in attendance to watch him.

“Incredibly fun to make a national team debut. We have an incredibly good team with lots of good players. So much fun,” he said.

“I entered the match well. I played as a winger but was supposed to be a “ten” near Isaac (Kiese Thelin). I got the ball well, put some simple passes and played easily. There were some good promotions so I’m very pleased.

“It wasn’t something I thought about, but maybe that’s how it should be at a Swedish A national team match. Incredibly fun.”
