Newcastle United have ‘entered the fray’ for Kieran Trippier, with Atletico Madrid willing to do business if the offer is good enough.
The Magpies are keen to use their newfound wealth in the January transfer window, with Eddie Howe targeting signings to strengthen his squad for their fight against relegation.
Additions in defence are likely to be key in that pursuit as Newcastle’s defence has been their major weak point this season.
Trippier has recently been named as a potential target, and Marca report that the full-back ‘has an offer’ from them.
Indeed, Trippier was determined to move in the summer when the defender wanted a wage increase but was not offered it by the Spanish side.
He was, therefore, ‘pressed’ with offers from the Premier League, particularly Manchester United, but Diego Simeone made it clear he didn’t want a sale, and the only way out was if United paid Trippier’s €40m release clause.
That didn’t happen, but now Newcastle have ‘entered the fray’ two weeks before the January transfer window is set to open.
They’ve made an offer to the player but will still have to convince Atletico, although they have changed their stance from the summer.
They will now ‘pay attention’ to any ‘possible big offer’ that might be made, although it’s not made clear what their price for Trippier is.
Either way, there’s hope for Newcastle, who can use some of their newfound fortunes to satisfy both them and Trippier’s desire to return to England.
