Newcastle United may be pointed to a release clause of €120m if they step up their interest in Sao Paulo youngster William Gomes.
That’s according to BMC News, who add their own information to the pot today after Newcastle’s interest in Gomes was made clear this week.
They explain that Gomes is ‘known as a revelation’ in the Sao Paulo youth ranks. Because of that, the Brazilian club signed him up to a new deal in August that links him to the club until 2028 and includes a €120m release clause.
Whether they would stick to such a figure isn’t clear, but Sao Paulo’s board are aware of the interest. They are treating any negotiations with caution and want to properly assess the forward’s market value.
So far, no formal proposals have been made but there is an expectation that there will be future developments. Gomes is currently represented by Talents Sports, the agency who took Gustavo Nunes to Brentford in the summer.
Sao Paulo desperately need sales to help balance their books and Gomes would help on that front. Indeed, selling the youngster could bring them ‘significant financial relief’.
They believe Newcastle’s interest in Gomes highlights the value of their youth set up and are hoping it can open the way for ‘financial opportunities’ to be taken advantage of in future.
The first would presumably be Gomes, who they are now trying to value appropriately in case Newcastle step up their interest.
