Once seen as the next big thing to come out of Spain, Marco Asensio, while not entirely stalling his career at Real Madrid, hasn’t quite had the amount of minutes he will have wanted.
He’s only started just over half of the La Liga games he has been eligible for, and with a contract expiring in 2023, this summer is the best time for all involved to seal a transfer.
Newcastle United have been linked here and there, as have other Premier League clubs, and it appears Jorge Mendes is engineering some sort of move for the 26-year-old this summer.
While there is likely to be a renewal offer from Real Madrid, it’s expected the terms will be lower than the ones he currently has, which isn’t what he wants.
After learning this, his new agent, Mendes, has started to ‘begin to search the international market’ for a new landing spot, according to Cuatro.
It’s made clear the player ‘has a good market in Italy and England, where Juventus and Newcastle have already asked about a future operation’.
However, they make it clear ‘the club that has gone the furthest so far’ are Milan, who are ‘in talks with Asensio’s entourage and have already told them that his current salary of around €5m is not an obstacle’.
We all know Newcastle also wouldn’t have any issue giving Asensio the money he feels he deserves, but first we’ll have to wait and see who Eddie Howe wants for next season, and whether the Spaniard is truly among his targets.
