Throughout January’s transfer deadline day, there was a big question mark at Newcastle once it was announced Islam Slimani would be arriving from Leicester: where would Aleksandr Mitrovic end up?

At first, everyone thought it would be Anderlecht, and it certainly looked like that would be the case, with the Serbian striker travelling from the north of England to Belgium to pass his medical, but a set of circumstances meant the deal fell through, and Mitrovic ended up moving to Fulham on loan where he’s already scored two goals in five appearances.

However, one man who would have done things differently is Mark Coucke, the Belgian club’s new owner, who will only start meddling with transfers come the summer.

He said, relayed by DH“I don’t understand what Anderlecht did. You need solutions if players leave. Sorry, but it’s called management. Anderlecht had a problem scoring goals, but they sold four players: Hanni, Stanciu, Harbaoui and Beric. And I would have liked for Mitrovic to come. That would have been a good thing.”

While he promised he wouldn’t go to crazy in the summer, he also made it clear things would change a bit, and you’ve got to think that had he been helping out, the money would have been there to bring back the Newcastle striker.

Maybe in the summer? With Rafa Benitez in charge, it seems there’s little chance of Mitrovic having a future at St James’ Park.
