Costa Rican icon Paulo Wanchope has defender compatriot Brandon Aguilera for joining League One side Bristol Rovers from Nottingham Forest.

The former striker has been speaking to CR Hoy regarding the midfielder, who made the surprising move from the Premier League side late in the January transfer window.

Aguilera has been with Nottingham Forest since joining from LD Alajuelense in July 2022 but is yet to make his mark at the club instead first going out on loan to Guanacasteca and then Estoril’s U23’s in Portugal last season.

He return to Forest in the summer but has only made 11 appearances totalling 684 minutes in total this season, with seven of those coming in Premier League 2.

He, therefore, decided to head out at the end of the January transfer window, sealing a move to Bristol Rovers on loan.

That deal certainly raised some eyebrows back in his homeland, where they are questioning why one of their rising stars for the future is joining a side who currently sit tenth in England’s third division.

Wanchope has moved to defend the transfer, though, insisting the division will be a far more competitive one for the Nottingham Forest man than many may think.

“It’s a competitive league, where there are clubs that have been in the Premier League,” he said.

“For example, Derby County, who because of financial problems had sanctions and were relegated to that league, there is also Bolton, Charlton, Wigan, Portsmouth, clubs that not so long ago were in the Premiership. It’s a competitive league as well.

“It’s a demanding third division, with organisations that are very good, that have a Premier League infrastructure,”
