Manchester United ‘will make an attempt’ to sign PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo in the winter market, according to Voetbal International, relayed by Voetbal Primeur.

The Netherlands international’s fine displays [13 goals and 17 assists] for the Eredivisie side this season, and his form for Oranje at the World Cup, have caught attention from top European clubs.

Real Madrid, Liverpool and Bayern Munich are also looking at the forward and VI state they will provide competition to Manchester United.

PSV manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has admitted the 23-year-old could leave in January.

It is wonderful how he has manifested himself. I enjoyed him and he deserved this. Because of how he has behaved, how he has continued to work and continue to perform. I was able to help him from very close. That makes me proud,” Van Nistelrooy told VI.

“And then I’ll give him his path when it comes. If I have the choice, I prefer summer, but it can also be now. You just know there comes a time when you can’t say no.”

The Red Devils maintain an interest in the Dutchman after looking at him in the summer. Eindhovens Dagblad, relayed by Soccer News, state Manchester United seem the ‘most concrete’ to sign the player in the mid-season window.

Gakpo held talks with Erik ten Hag in the summer and ED say these contacts may be resumed in January. Faced with the possibility of losing their star, PSV have identified AZ Alkmaar’s Jesper Karlsson as his potential successor.

With Alkmaar asking €20m for Karlsson, ED say Gakpo’s sale must raise more than €50m and almost half of it would be reserved for the Swede.
