Inter Milan defender Davide Santon came close to signing for Sunderland, but the deal fell through in the end, as everything seems to do with Santon rumours coming out of Italy.

Sunderland had reportedly agreed a £3m fee for Santon, with Inter keen to offload him. The player didn’t feature much under Roberto Mancini last season and isn’t a part of his future plans either.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport on Tuesday, Crystal Palace or Middlesbrough could be his new destination in the Premier League, picking up the crumbs of the proposed Sunderland deal. There is no mention of any contract offer yet, but it is believed both the sides are looking for a right back.

Middlesbrough were also linked to Antonio Barragan earlier this week and are quite active in the transfer market. Maybe they see Santon as a decent purchase, or maybe the Italian media see Middlesbrough as the latest club they can conceivably link.

Crystal Palace have been linked previously, as have half the Premier League.

Santon made just 10 league appearances last season for Inter, and has another couple of years left on his existing deal.
