Barcelona continue to put the weight of the world on Frenkie de Jong’s shoulders, with the Blaugrana wanting to sell the midfielder so they can more easily register their new signings this summer.

The Dutchman has been most strongly linked with Manchester United, with a belief in Spain there’s an agreement in place for the move and things are just awaiting the approval of the player.

In a fresh report on Monday, Catalan newspaper Sport say Barca want to end the ‘soap opera’ as soon as possible. To try and make this happen there’s going to be a meeting in the ‘next few hours’ with De Jong, in an attempt to ‘untangle’ the situation.

Quite how they’re going to do that isn’t explained, and there doesn’t appear to have been any real changes in the situation. Sport make a lot of Xavi Hernandez using the player in central defence in the past two matches, despite the manager insisting that he wasn’t sending any message out with his selection choices.

Manchester United are again named as a potential destination, along with Chelsea, and it doesn’t appear that Erik ten Hag’s side have yet walked away from the midfielder.

Barcelona clearly hope this meeting can push De Jong closer to the exit, and convince him to accept the move he’s been reluctant to make.
