Manchester United are in the picture to sign Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini. That’s according to journalist Niccolò Ceccarini, and he made this claim in his column for TuttoMercatoWeb.

Both the 19-year-old and Matteo Ruggeri scored in Atalanta’s 2-1 win over Sporting in the Europa League, and Ceccarini highlights this when explaining how the Serie A side are able to enjoy their ‘jewels’.

When discussing the clubs interested in the centre-back, Manchester United are mentioned.

Ceccarini says Napoli made an approach to sign the Italy international in the last window but ended their interest after their Serie A rivals valued him at €50m.

Juventus and Inter Milan like the defender a lot and there is also ‘strong interest’ from Manchester United. That’s all the journalist has to say about the Old Trafford club.

It’s worth noting Ceccarini makes a short comment about Manchester United in a lengthy column and points this out when discussing why Atalanta are fortunate to have Scalvini and Ruggeri.

Raphaël Varane and Lisandro Martínez have been the first-choice centre-back pairing for Erik ten Hag and the manager hasn’t been able to rely upon the duo regularly this season.

Varane has struggled with fitness while the Argentina international will be on the sidelines until the start of 2024. This has seen the Red Devils linked to a few centre-backs and it may be another reason why Scalvini is thrown into the mix.

At this stage, it doesn’t feel especially concrete and it may be a case of the Italian media hyping the player up.
