A few months ago, reports from the Brazilian media claimed Manchester United are interested in Flamengo midfielder João Gomes.

It was first claimed that the Red Devils would like to pay £32m for the signing. Then a different source claimed that the Old Trafford side were sending two scouts to watch the player in Rio de Janeiro.

Now journalist Julio Miguel Neto brings an update on the midfielder’s situation. On Youtube, he points out Manchester United as one of the clubs who are following the midfielder, as they see him as a replacement for Paul Pogba and Andreas Pereira.

Neto explained that Flamengo president Marcos Braz has been hinting that João Gomes could still leave this summer, as the club has been finding difficulties agreeing a new contract with him. Meanwhile, Benfica and Atletico Madrid are other clubs who are said to be interested in the 21-year-old.

Earlier this week, we covered quotes from the player claiming Liverpool are ‘a club he’d play for’. However, he was just responding to a question from fans, and would certainly forget this statement in case of a deal with Manchester United.
