Manchester United continue to be reported as one of the best positioned sides to sign Konstantinos Manolas from Roma in the next transfer window.

The Red Devils get a mention in a story from Calcio Mercato today, as the Italian outlet talks about competition for the defender.

The latest club to join the race would be Atletico Madrid, who are looking for a guy who can replace Diego Godin as he’s expected to leave in the summer.

Calcio Mercato says Atletico would have competition from Juventus and from ‘all the big English clubs’, with ‘Manchester United in first place’.

Calcio Mercato recalls that Manolas is currently protected by a €36m release clause. In the current market, that’s really no protection at all.

They say Atletico Madrid would have no problems affording that price, although it’s pretty obvious that Juventus and Manchester United can easily pay the amount as well.

As we’ve pointed out several times, the Old Trafford club are continually linked to Manolas but there’s never been anything really concrete about talks with the player or his club.
